Happy New Year!

As we see in the New Year 7 hours ahead of GMT, we wish you all the very best for 2020.

Since our last visit to Bangkok, the biggest change has been the appearance of a huge shopping/eating/leisure complex, just a 10 minute walk from our flat. IconSiam is now the top spot for viewing the spectacular fireworks we’ve seen so many times in the city and, learning from our experience of trying to get a river-side view of the Royal Barges procession, we booked a table for the event in a Thai restaurant on the 5th floor of the building.

The building is said to have cost US$1.5 billion, including a couple of smart apartment blocks.

With its vast range of global brands, you can buy anything here, from high street to high end. Alain Ducasse may well have set up a new restaurant but this is our eating place of choice:

Sitting on low stools, we eat Som Tam, green papaya salad, followed by:
Rice noodles and Thai green curry with chicken at £1.25 a bowl.

And for pudding:

Well, they’re sort of jellies – very intensely fruity flavoured – with coconut milk the base….. No is the answer to your question!
